Authorities in Hoi An City will officially launch a community tour to the Tra Que Vegetable Village in 2020, said the Centre for Culture, Sports, Radio and Television on December 20.
Tra Que Village in Cam Ha Commune is over 500 years old and about 2.5km away from Hoi An Town. It is surrounded by De Vong River and Tra Que Lake and known for traditional vegetable farms. Favourable location, weather and long historic and cultural development are major factors that should attract tourists.
According to the elders, the village was first named Nhu Que, meaning the whole village has the scent of cinnamon. In the early 18th century, a king visited the village while travelling along De Vong River and heard about the vegetable farming there. The king changed the village name to Tra Que after eating a vegetable that smelled like the camellia and tasted like cinnamon.
The reputation of Tra Que Village quickly spreads out along with rapid tourism development of Hoi An. Vegetables from Tra Que have appeared more often at markets, supermarkets and restaurants.
Several tour agencies have organised tours to Tra Que Village and let tourists experience the life of the farmers which quickly became popular.
However, Hoi An authorities said Tra Que still had lots of unexploited potential and lacked a sustainable development plan. Moreover, unmanaged development is a huge risk to the surrounding environment and many agencies failed to introduce the history and cultural values of Tra Que to tourists.
In September, Hoi An authorities approved a community tourism development project in Tra Que project after consensus from the villagers.
According to the plan, starting from January 1, 2020, Tra Que Village will officially become a new destination. Various preparations are required to clean up the landscape as well as setting up more activities and services such as a programme of visiting historical and cultural sites associated with the development process of the village.
With a ticket price of VND35,000, tourists will be able to experience the farming work, visit the sites and enjoy local food there. Hoi An authorities hope this will be a new destination attracting tourists to Hoi An
